The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta is seeking an individual for the position in the Economic Section.

Economic Specialist - Jakarta
Basic Function of Position :
  • The incumbent serves as the U.S. Embassy's Economic Trade and Investment Specialist, under the primary supervision of the Trade and Investment Unit Chief. In this capacity, the incumbent is responsible for advancing U.S. government economic interest in Indonesia. 
  • S/He provides substantive, strategic and procedural advice to strengthen bilateral trade and investment cooperation, and enhance the effectiveness of collaborative programs. S/He develops and maintains close contact with Indonesian officials from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, universities, and the U.S. and Indonesian private sectors in order to increase Mission understanding of economic issues and promote U.S. policy objectives and commercial interests.
  • Trade and Investment issues include, but are not limited to trade liberalization and market access, investment climate, intellectual property protections, multilateral economic forums, and the creative industries.
Qualifications Required :
All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Trade, Investment, Business, Law or International Affairs or similar field is required.
  • Must have a minimum five years experience in economics, business, or policy related field, with demonstrated understanding of economic policy and experience working with government officials, and/or private sector foreign and domestic business professionals.
  • Level 4 (Fluent) in speaking/ reading/ writing English and Bahasa Indonesia are required. Language Proficiency will be tested.
  • Strong grasp of Economic Policy issues including trade and investment in Indonesia, is required, as is a thorough knowledge of the Indonesian government agencies, NGOs, and international business and organizations that work on these issues. Thorough knowledge of the political, bureaucratic, and operational aspects of relevant ministries and agencies in Indonesia including parliament. In one year, the incumbent is expected to have knowledge of the role, function and operations of the Department of State (particularly Economic Bureau) and other U.S. agencies (USTR, USPTO, U.S. Customs/ICE/CBP, FAA, TSA, USTDA, Commercial and Treasury) with responsibilities for Economic issues.
  • Must have the ability and confidence to interact and work constructively with high level officials in the U.S. and Indonesian government in addition to working-level contacts. Must have the ability to coordinate multi-institutional activities (U.S. and Indonesian). Must be able to analyze and interpret Indonesian government policies (including documents and publications) and actions related to economic issues.
  • Salary: Ordinarily Resident: Rp. 187,271,861- p.a. (Full performance starting salary)
